We are preparing for another get-away...this time during the hot months of summer in SW Utah. We'll spend 4 weeks in Portugal, 3 weeks in Spain and 3-1/2 weeks in France. These destinations are unusual for us as we really enjoy lesser developed countries. We've always said, "We'll do Europe when we're old because it is easy!" I guess we've reached that milestone.
We plan to stay in Lisbon, Salema, Tavira, Barcelona, Tamariu, Collioure, Aix en Provence and Paris--a nice mix of small coastal towns and big cities, no place less than a week. Normally, we do not move quite so much on a trip. However, we have never been to any of these places and didn't know which we might use as a base. Also unlike other trips, we've reserved all our lodging through Air BnB and VRBO ahead of time as we will be there in high tourist season.
We will fly from Portugal (Faro to Lisbon) to eastern Spain (Barcelona) due to the distance involved. Otherwise, we will take trains and buses to get from place to place Once in a location, we'll walk a lot and maybe rent a bike when it is appropriate. We've also made many train reservations as they too fill up in summer.
We're now in the process of thinking through what needs to be done at the house for such a lengthy absence and what we need to take with us (the rule: only enough to fill one carry-on).
The trip seems to be approaching quickly. We'll blog next when we arrive in Lisbon. Hope you'll follow our adventures...and misadventures.
As many of you know, we teach environmental science at the local university. As a result, we have mixed feelings about traveling overseas. We love to travel and explore new places. But in doing so, we contribute tons of carbon to the atmosphere, worsening our climate crisis. This is not some crisis in the future. It is right now and we all need to rethink how we live. Some of our friends have given up overseas flights. This may be our last.
